ROLE
Kitchen and joinery designer
From the outset, this kitchen and scullery was to be the heart of the client’s newly built architectural home set in the heart of the MacKenzie Country. Part of a large open plan living, dining and entertaining space with stunning views, I was tasked with creating a warm and welcoming family space.
Lucky enough to own a limited-edition Dick Frizzell decorated refrigerator, the clients requested this piece of uniquely New Zealand art be showcased in the space. I framed this in a chunky oak veneer box to give this piece the attention it rightfully deserves. Dark tinted glass display cabinets run the width of the kitchen and reflect the architectural ply ceiling. LED lighting within the units showcase the contents and gives a lovely softened glow.
All under bench cabinetry is wrapped in horizontal grained oak veneer punctuated with sleek handle recesses. Ample drawers provide easily accessible storage, and a technology drawer was included in the island to provide a discreet charging station for the family’s cell phones and tablets.
The scullery became the ‘business’ part of the kitchen. This is where breakfasts are prepared, school lunches are made, and dishes are dumped. Open shelf storage above bench provides easy snacking access for all family members, and LED strip lighting ensures it is a well-lit preparation space.
This is a kitchen of contrasts – dark and light, matte and glossy, thick and thin, classic and contemporary. Designed to reflect the different personalities of those who inhabit this home, this family hub feels comfortable and homely while still being a strikingly beautiful space.
