This kitchen was a 100th birthday present for the client’s weatherboard bungalow home built in
1915, as part of extensive renovations to create an open flow through the living spaces and to
bring the house ‘kicking and screaming’ into the 21st century.
The kitchen opens to outdoor living on the east and is adjacent to the dining area with an easy
flow to a large deck to the west, making the most of sunny mornings and warm summer evenings.
With this in mind, the client requested a modern, open plan kitchen that made entertaining easy
while also catering to the family’s daily needs. Clean lines, accessible storage and a touch of an
industrial feel were asked for, with natural timber to be a feature.
Storage was provided by two Blum Space Tower pantries, plenty of under bench drawers and
stepped over head cabinetry. Recessed extrusion handles were powder coated to match the
gloss Dezignatek, and along with the horizontal grain of the American walnut veneer give the
space a long lineal look. The charcoal tones of the bench tops accentuate the natural warmth
of the timber, which is highlighted by the use of a super matt clear finish. To create a visual flow
through the home and to provide an industrial edge, the concrete render used on the fireplace
in the adjacent living room was utilised as a feature on the island and as the splash back, giving
a tactile quality to the kitchen.
